The Story Behind the Rhino Under the Hard Hat

Hector wasn’t supposed to be famous.

He was just a little rhino that turned up on a construction site one day, sitting quietly in the corner of a cabin wearing a tiny hard hat.

Nobody knew where he came from.

Some say he arrived in a toolbox. Some say he came out of the back of a van. Others reckon he’s been turning up on sites for years… just watching.

But what people noticed about Hector was this:

Whenever he appeared, people started talking.

They’d pick him up, take the mick, move him around site, stick him on a machine or in the canteen… and suddenly conversations started.

The kind of conversations that normally don’t happen on site.

“Alright mate, how you doing?” “You alright?” “Fancy a brew?”

Hector never said a word.

But somehow, he got people talking.

And that’s when we realised something important…

Construction workers are brilliant at protecting buildings, railways, roads and bridges.

But sometimes we forget to protect each other.

That’s where Hector comes in.

Hector’s Purpose

Hector the Protector exists for one simple reason:

To get people talking on site.

Not in a corporate way. Not in a “sit in a circle and share feelings” way.

Just the way construction workers do it best:

• Banter • Checking in • Having a laugh • Looking out for your mates

Because sometimes a five-minute chat can change someone’s whole day.

And sometimes…

It might even save a life.

Hector’s Personality

Hector isn’t serious. He’s not corporate. He’s one of the lads on site.

His personality:

🦏 Loyal🦏 Funny🦏 Curious🦏 Always looking out for others🦏 A bit cheeky🦏 Loves a brew

He doesn’t judge.

He just sits there and reminds everyone of one thing:

Look out for your mates.

 Hector’s Rule

Wherever Hector turns up, one rule applies:

Nobody gets left behind.
